Luca Curci talks with Kelly Jean Gillow during MIXING IDENTITIES, third appointment of CANVAS ART FAIR, at THE LINE Contemporary Art Space in London.

“Art has always been a part of me for as long as I can remember. Like the air I breath, like every heartbeat in me, it’s natural and pure – a beautiful, fun expression… like a fun, exciting, colorful gift!”. As a child, Kelly Jean always loved to create. “I am so happy and grateful today to be so closely connected with my inner child and to have an internal passion for art and creation. I absolutely love creation – to create!”. Kelly Jean believes that each and everyone of us enters life already pre-packaged with gifts, talents, passions and purposes. “Our job is to unwrap the gifts we have within us as we move throughout our journey. The act of becoming is constant. We are always becoming more like the person we are intended to be. Art for me is the act of creating, expressing feelings and thoughts. Art is my gift and passion and part of my higher purpose in life. I want my art to radiate all things good in every person who fuses with my work”. Kelly Jeans art expresses thoughts and feelings that are mostly powerfully positive and fun and the purpose of the works is to bring more of these thoughts and feelings into her viewers lives through constant viewing and fusion with the energy of the artwork, on a continual basis.

Luca Curci – What is art to you?

Kelly Jean Gillow – Art for me is really being a part of creation itself, while expressing feeling and thought. Art is my gift and passion and part of my higher purpose in life. I want my art to radiate all things good in every person who fuses with my work, a true bond of expression.

LC – What are your thoughts while you paint? Do you have any habits or rituals while you work?

KJG – I like to “step away”, meaning clear all my thoughts. Typically, when I am ready to create, there is this huge creative urge to get into my studio and get going with the work, it’s exciting for me like an adventure. I am creating something that has never been done before – ever. It’s my own replication, my own vision, unique to me, a gift to give to others. I have to get out of my own way in order to allow the creativity to flow through me. If I overthink, my work reflects that and I will be unsatisfied with the work, in which case I may recycle it or toss it. I have to FEEL the ENERGY and FEEL the INSPIRATION until it moves my brush. Sometimes, I think I am in the process of creating something and it turns out totally different, but usually better than anticipated. Depending on the subject matter, I enjoy listening to music most times while I work that I feel reflects the emotion of the artwork. This puts me in vibration with the message I want to portray in my work and also allows me to FEEL MORE FREE TO EXPRESS!

LC – Where do you find your inspiration?

KJG – Mainly from my natural environment. I absolutely love nature, science, thought & COLOR… all things beautiful and fun! Inspiration can come to me at the craziest times, I really never know! I usually get inspired so much throughout any given day at any given time that I actually have an inspiration journal that goes with me everywhere to draw and jot down ideas that come to me in that moment so that I do not forget them throughout my busy day!

LC – Do you use art to express something in particular? Is it like your medium of expression?

KJG – My work is intended to be an object of expression that the viewer continually fuses with through thought and feeling that will promote, for them, more of those thoughts and feelings that are associated with the work. Each piece of artwork is infused with a positive foundation of energy. I want for my viewer to not just think about the piece but to feel the energy of it! My work is intended to act as a catalyst for the attraction of all things good both thoughts and feelings for the viewer through constant repetition of viewing and the thoughts and feelings associated with the work.

LC – How do you feel when you see your work completed?

KJG – I feel the same… COMPLETE! It is a very freeing feeling that fills me with gratitude to be a part of creation itself, and when I’ve completed a work, the feeling is like no other!

LC – What do you think about the concept of this festival? How did it inspire you?

KJG – The concept of the festival – the reconstruction of new identities, the transformation of our identities – is a beautiful concept that I really feel very passionate about. I believe we are all on a path of becoming, we are continually transforming, so I was very excited when asked to be a part of the exhibition!

LC – Can you explain something about the artworks you have on exhibition?

KJG – My two works that are being exhibited are entitled “Shimmered Essence” and “The Inner Dance”. The first work, “Shimmered Essence”, is a representation of every human beings internal light. A life journey of discovered oneness, a selfless mission of self illumination. Every person has a shimmer in them, a shine, a light. Your shimmer is unique to you and is meant to be expressed in all of its glory for it is the true essence of you. The second work, “The Inner Dance”, is all about the human experience! The human experience begins internally and continues throughout a lifetime. An individualized inner world of every thought, feeling and emotion is first internalized and then expressed through the body in action, motion and form. The inner dance with mind and thought is a dance worth keeping, colorful, bright, fun and full of beautiful twists, turns and flips that will grow and beautify one self.

LC – Did you enjoy cooperating with us?

KJG – Absolutely! Every person was so very helpful and responsive throughout the entire time. If I had any question, they would answer me very quickly and professionally.

LC – What do you think about ITSLIQUID Platform?

KJG – ITSLIQUID is wonderful! For this exhibition, I really enjoyed the entire experience. Following the event live on Facebook and reading about other artists who exhibited was exciting. I loved the video of the event and the space of the exhibition looked fantastic. It’s a beautiful collaboration of people and talent!

LC – What are your suggestions about our services? Is there something more we can provide to artists?

KJG – One thought I had was … what if there was a way you could provide for artists an up-close photo of their work on display at the event with your logo ITSLIQUID and the title of the exhibition on it? This way, artists would have a professional photo to add to their portfolio or webpage, social media, etc. Each artist would advertise their participation in ITSLIQUID exhibition and it would be a great “souvenir” for each artist who participated to have as a memory of the event… just a thought!
